Interested in submitting a story to Project Groundswell? We are always looking for talented individuals to help generate content for the site. Here are some general guidelines. Please email us for more information.
Types of content: We have two major categories of posts: Featured (analysis) and The Ground Up (news). Featured posts are reserved for more in-depth analysis, photo essays, video features, etc. The Ground Up is updated much more regularly and more heavily weighted towards featuring external content such as interesting news items, reports, and studies.
Content focus: We welcome and strive for a diversity of perspectives in our content. We love first-hand experiences and personal stories that invite the reader to explore broader issues and themes. We respect different views, and do not want to venture too far into unsubstantiated and “in my opinion” based blogging, or overly partisan battlegrounds. Let the science and your own intelligence speak for itself. If you are planning an editorial style piece, we want objective arguments that are supported with solid, well thought out analysis and careful examination.
The goal/idea is to offer information and focus to issue areas that are not necessarily accessible to most folks, and we try to do that in a way that is palatable, clear, and inclusive. We feel that this approach stimulates the creative process, and helps us maintain a reputable “voice” and “brand” for our content.
Tips for success

- Keep your copy relatively short (500 – 800) words. If you feel you need to go longer than that, we would suggest breaking the post into a 2-3 (or however many you need) part series.
- Photos, videos, and other visual elements are very effective. We have found that you can tell a long story more effectively with fewer words and stronger images. If they are not your photos, make sure they are credited, and you have permission to use them.
- Avoid long paragraphs. Remember, you are writing for the web, not print, and when you are staring at a computer screen or mobile device, long paragraphs are less inviting.
- Use links to reference topics you mention in your piece, and as a means to substantiate your claims.
