Thanks Care! Glad you are passing around the movie, I haven't had a chance to see it all the way through, but what I have seen has been interesting and thought-provoking.

I own the movie, have been passing it around, and am so glad to see that you are taking it further by writing about Helena's message. The phrase that stands out for me in this in the one about needing to re-regulate global trade and de-regulate local trade. That change would make such a huge positive difference in so many lives. Thanks Laki!

Hi
Writing to you from the Nilgiris (Blue Mountains) of south India - the first Biosphere Reserve of India. Our trust has worked relentlessly to create awareness about and revive a dying art form practiced by a primitive tribal group - Kurumbas. A few years back only 2-3 artists and only 1 practicing artist remained.
Our project aims to create awareness, train the next generation of tribal artists and provide livelihood for current and future artists.
would like to share our efforts with your readers.

[...] It is not rare to see overflowing tanks on South Delhi’s residential buildings when the pump has not been switched off, or to see big cars being showered with drinking water in peak summer days. Simultaneously, about 10% of India’s population does not have access to safe drinking water. Political conflicts over water are a reality in Delhi, as shows the unrest about the Renuka dam.
I just think that if Captains of Industry and 'Pop' stars are granted Knighthoods for basically doing their Jobs and also getting a very good living from it on the way; surely the people such as Vanya, who have given up all their own basic needs, comforts and family to work for the greater good, should be given such Honours.
It would help oil the wheels of her negotiations with the Bureaucratic Organisations that she has to deal with on a day to day basis if she were to be recognised in such a way.
She still is unable to get her residency permit despite her phenomenal achievements and strong family connections in Southern India which means that after 17 years in the country she still has to make repeated Visa applications. It's monstrous.
I think that it would just take one letter from the right person to Prince Charles to make it all possible; even perhaps forwarding this article and comments?

Thank you for your comments! It is true, Ms. Orr has done much more that is not mentioned in this small article, so thank you for pointing that out. Perhaps we should start a campaign to tell Prince Charles, do you think he would pay attention if enough people wrote him?

For Project Groundswell, we generally refer to all persons by their last name, but it may be time to review our policy.

Do you have any suggestions of other people or organizations we should highlight?

Very good article about a remarkable woman.
Could we have more please of her tremendous input into the area of the Nilgiris and beyond? Her work with tribal peoples, sufferers of AIDS, her projects in dozens of schools throughout the Nilgiris promoting bio-diverse methods of food production, her commitment to cleaning up the plastics and rubbish ('Plastic Free Nilgiris'), the establishment of training programmes promoting Organic Bio-dynamic farming methods - which have resulted in her being asked by the Queen of Bhutan to set up medicinal gardens in Thimpu; to be extended into the mountains of the Himalaya. Her single minded determination to not only grow plants for essential oil production but to set up distillation and packaging units and sell these oils and the purest of organic plants, tea and vanilla on the world markets. The establishment of an Organic vegetable shop has created a community outlet for small individual producers in the area.
If you Google Vanya Orr you will find at least two pages of her achievements; all generated from (initially), one room over a cowshed near Dodabetta. She has suffered from cold winters, Typhoid (rat in a water supply) and lack of a reliable car or computer. All this has been driven by her commitment to an area where most of her family have been born, lived, married and are buried. She is still trying to establish 'residency ' so that she can build herself a small home in the Nilgiris. She should be being put forward for a Honour - Dame - equivalent in India? Anyone out there who will do this for this amazing woman? Prince Charles, Sir?
p.s It's a bit rude to refer to a 77year old woman as 'Orr'.
