The graphic shows the states with the highest rate of bike mode use, the 10 cities with the largest share of bike use, and the ratio of female to male riders for each state and profiled city. The numbers represent each city’s rank as a Bicycle Friendly Community.

Apparently, the ratio of female to male bicyclists is an important indicator as to how safe a city is for biking. Studies have shown that cities where bicycle infrastructure is perceived to be unsafe see a much lower percentage of women on bikes compared with men. In New York City, the ratio of men to women bike riders is almost 3:1. But in Central Park, 44% of riders on the off-street bike paths are women.

With only 26% of bike commuters nationwide being women, this graphic shows that much more investment is needed in bicycle oriented infrastructure.
